How Geothermal Heat Pumps Work

Geothermal heat pump systems transfer heat to or from the ground, allowing for the extraction of heat for winter warming and efficient cooling during warmer months.

At the center of a heat pump is a cycle of refrigerant that transfers the heat. Heat is exchanged with the ground to take advantage of warm, stable temperatures below the surface. This consistency allows for efficient performance even during the coldest months of the year.

Heat pumps can improve the normal flow of heat from warmer to cooler spaces, or move heat in the opposite direction, against natural flow, depending on what is needed.
